NoHo

NoHo as in north of Houston is the younger sister of the superstar SoHo.The area goes west from Broadway to Bowery and south from Houston to Astor Place. It’s the area between West and East Village and it represents at best the clash between these two metropolitan cultures. It is not as crazy and alternative as the East Village and not as glamorous as SoHo. It is a new epicenter of art, disign, culture and fashion very multietinic and young, also because of the nearby NYU campus. It’s also one of the home od TBNY and so very dear to our hearts.

Historically:

In 1748, what is now known as NoHo (Lafayette and Astor Place), was New York’s first botanical garden, owned by a Swiss physician, Jacob Sperry, who grew flowers and plants. These gardens became the destination of weekend strollers up Broadway.  Fifty-six years later, a man named Delacroix transformed Sperry’s property into the fashionable Vauxhall Garden, where New Yorkers could eat, drink, meet, listen to  band music and, in the evenings watch, fireworks and theatrical events.

Washington Square Park (two blocks from the current northern portion of NoHo) functioned, from the early 1780s, as an eight acre common graveyard and public prison. Around 1830 it became a military parade grounds and a spacious pedestrian common.  On the perimeter stately red brick townhouses were built in Greek Revival style and they attracted  wealthy families. The most important addition to this square in 1892 was the triumphal arch designed by Stanford White.

The University of the City of New York (now NYU), established itself on the northeastern corner of Washington Square in a building completed in 1837.  In 1859 Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art opened on Astor place. It was a private tuition-free college provided by Peter Cooper to educate workers and also incorporated the Female School of Design to provide women with an alternative to second class labor.

From 1850s to 1910s, Noho prospered as one of the City’s major retail and wholesale dry goods centers. Famous architects were commissioned to design store and loft buildings in popular architectural styles, providing a rich backdrop against which merchants sold products and shoppers promenaded and bought goods.
